Traditionally, farmers in Santa Elena have sold their coffee cherries to middlemen, eliminating the possibility of earning better prices based on the quality of the coffee. To change this outcome, Jose joined a select group of producers who work with Catracha Coffee Company. With better payment for his coffee from Catracha, Jose has been able to improve the health of his farm and the quality of his coffee production. Jose processes his coffee using his own micro-mill to depulp, ferment, wash and dry his coffee before delivering it to Catracha Coffee.
